3. PVC: The Budget-Conscious Option
Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) is a rigid plastic that is softened with plasticizers to create flexible seals. It is a common low-cost alternative.
Low Cost: PVC is one of the most economical materials available for sealing strips.
Adequate Weather Resistance: It provides decent protection against moisture and air infiltration in mild conditions.
Significant Limitations:
Poor Temperature Tolerance: PVC becomes stiff and brittle in cold weather and can soften and deform in high heat, leading to premature failure.
Plasticizer Migration: The softening agents can leach out over time, causing the material to harden, shrink, and crack. This results in a short service life compared to rubber.
Ideal for: Short-term, low-budget projects, or interior applications not exposed to extreme temperatures or direct sunlight.
